Special
Projects

Working on a small nonprofit marketing and communications team means staying flexible, creative, and ready to tackle just about anything. Beyond the day-to-day responsibilities, I often take on special projects that push the boundaries of my role and help drive the organization forward in new ways.

These projects have challenged me to think strategically, adapt quickly, and develop new skills—all while keeping our mission front and center. Here are a few examples that took me beyond my comfort zone and into exciting new territory.

SPCA Program Videos

In 2022, SPCA Wake launched a six-part video series to highlight the impact of key programs as part of a televised and digital ad campaign. I developed storyboards, coordinated logistics and interviews, crafted interview questions, and collaborated with the production company throughout filming and editing to ensure each video stood on its own while contributing to a cohesive, inspiring series.

Following the campaign, the videos have continued to serve as powerful donor engagement tools—used in fundraising for a $28 million capital campaign and featured as keynote content during our annual gala.

Community Impact

This is my favorite video from the six-part series—a spotlight on our Community Impact team, which supports “the other end of the leash” by offering low-cost vet care, free pet food, and other essential services for pet owners. The video highlights the team’s wide-ranging work while staying focused on the core message: to help pets, we must also help people.

Shelter Transfer

I’ve watched this video a hundred times and it still moves me. It spotlights SPCA Wake’s shelter partnerships and how inter-agency collaboration helps save lives and support under-resourced municipal shelters across North Carolina.

The story centers on Andy Smith, the Director of Public Health in Northampton County, NC, who unexpectedly found himself overseeing the county’s animal shelter—an underfunded facility with just six dog runs, limited adopters, and a constant influx of animals. From the start, I knew this partnership would powerfully illustrate why SPCA Wake’s collaborative work is essential to improving outcomes for shelters statewide.

SPCA Merch Line

The SPCA’s merchandise line hadn’t been updated in years, so I took the lead on a full refresh—introducing new designs, expanding product offerings, and launching our first online merch store. I leveraged third-party production and drop-shipping to minimize overhead, researched products that aligned with our brand and audience, and built out the online store’s functionality to streamline fulfillment.

The revitalized line has been a hit with staff, volunteers, and adopters—boosting brand visibility and allowing supporters to represent SPCA Wake in their everyday lives.
